Growing Love in Discernment

And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ.” (Philippians 1:9-10)

In these verses, Paul expresses his prayer for the believers in Philippi, asking that their love grows more and more, not just in intensity but in discernment. This is a crucial prayer for every believer today: that our love for God and others would be guided by wisdom and discernment, allowing us to choose the right paths and approve what is excellent in God’s sight.

Context: Paul’s Prayer for Spiritual Growth

The Apostle Paul writes to the church in Philippi, expressing his deep care for their spiritual well-being. He desires that their love for God and each other is not blind or superficial but rooted in knowledge and understanding. Discernment is an essential component of this love, enabling them to make godly decisions and live in a way that honours God.

Application 1: Discernment in Our Love

Discernment is essential in how we love others. In a world full of differing opinions and ideologies, knowing how to love with wisdom is important. As believers, we are called to love not just in action but in knowledge. This means understanding the needs of others, knowing when to speak, when to listen, and when to offer help. Love that is grounded in discernment allows us to reflect Christ’s heart more fully.

Application 2: Approving What Is Excellent

Paul’s prayer also includes the ability to approve things that are excellent. Discernment enables us to choose the best path rather than simply settling for what is good. Whether it’s making decisions in our personal lives, at work, or in our ministries, we must constantly evaluate what is truly best in God’s eyes. Discernment helps us weigh choices carefully and make decisions that align with God’s will.

Application 3: Living with Integrity

Paul further prays that believers would be sincere and without offense. Discernment allows us to live with integrity, making choices that not only honour God but also maintain good relationships with others. A life lived in wisdom avoids unnecessary conflict and promotes peace and unity in the body of Christ.

Growing in Discernment

Just as Paul prayed for the Philippians, we too should seek to grow in love that is guided by discernment. As we ask God for wisdom, He will help us make decisions that are not only right but excellent in His sight.
